The technique of a silhouette can be subtle. By keeping most frontal lighting off the subjects, but allowing some side or rim lighting, we keep dimensionality of form, minimize detail, and draw attention where we want it, while avoiding the "cardboard cutout" style of silhouette. On the other hand, a total silhouette can be dramatic when the subject outline is interesting and the background is complementary and/or colorful.
